Right after World War II, it was widely believed that hard times would return as the free world staggered under the weight of war debt. To cope with such burdens, it was expected that Americans would join the rest of the world in turning to smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles. More than two dozen lightweight cars were introduced, but when good times unexpectedly returned, all those pioneering vehicles disappeared from the road; most going into bankruptcy.
One exception was the King Midget, produced by Midget Motors of Athens, Ohio, which soldiered on producing “the world’s lowest priced car,” advertising 60 to 90 miles per gallon and selling for less than a thousand dollars.
Bob Vahsholtz, of Arroyo Grande, recently wrote a book King Midget, The Story of America's Smallest Dream Car, celebrating the success of Midget Motors, and how they made a profit every year for more than two decades until the founders retired, never wavering from their commitment to efficiency.
On Wednesday, May 14th, members of the International King Midget Car Club will convene at Lompoc, where at 10:00 a.m., they will launch their King Midgets on a 20 mile economy run to the Pacific and back, to see how these historic little vehicles stack up against the 74 miles per gallon recently set by a Toyota Prius on the same course. Author Vahsholtz will be on hand with his 1964 King Midget.
This will be a preliminary run to be followed by another in Coshocton, Ohio on August 14 at the 18th Annual King Midget Jamboree.
